Text to SHA-256

256-bit SHA-2 digest computed locally with Web Crypto.

SHA-256 is widely used for integrity checks, blockchain, and general hashing. Paste any string and copy the 64 character hex digest.

Input
SHA-256

How it works

Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes. Output updates live.

SHA-256 outputs 256 bits, written as 64 hex characters.

What is SHA-256?

SHA-256 is part of SHA-2. It is widely used and currently recommended for many uses outside password storage (file integrity, TLS, certificates).

Passwords

Do not use plain SHA-256 for storing passwords. Use slow password hashes (Argon2, bcrypt, scrypt) with per-user salts.

Common questions

Is this SHA-256 generator free?
Yes. Unlimited use in the browser.
Do you log my input?
No. Processing stays in the page.
Why 64 hex characters?
256 bits equals 64 hex digits.
SHA-256 vs SHA-512?
Both are SHA-2. SHA-512 is larger and can be faster on 64-bit CPUs; SHA-256 is more common in protocols.
